Call them hubcaps, wheel trims or wheel covers: it's the same part — a plastic disc that clips onto a steel wheel to dress it up. This guide answers the questions that actually matter before you buy: which size, whether they'll fit your car, how fitting works, and what a printed hubcap can and can't do.
One part, several names
In the US people say hubcaps; in the UK and Ireland, wheel trims; wheel covers is common on both sides. In Germany it's Felgenkappen or Radkappen, in France enjoliveurs. Strictly speaking, an old-style hubcap only covered the hub, while a wheel trim dresses the whole wheel. Today all these words mean the same round cover, sold as a set of four — one per wheel.
What they're actually for
Three jobs. They protect the steel wheel and its nuts from road salt, grime and stone chips. They smooth the airflow over the wheel a little. And above all they turn a bare, often slightly rusty steel wheel into something that looks finished. No other part changes a car's look so cheaply: a set costs a fraction of a set of alloys.
The right size: read your tyre
A hubcap's size is the wheel diameter in inches. It's printed on the tyre sidewall: in "195/65 R15", the number after the R means 15 inches — so you need 15-inch hubcaps. Don't measure your old hubcap: its outer diameter is always a bit larger than the nominal size and leads people to the wrong one.
Common sizes run from 12 to 17 inches. As a rough guide, depending on year and trim level:
- 12 inches — very old city cars, such as the first Fiat Panda.
- 13 inches — older small cars: Vauxhall/Opel Corsa B, Fiat Panda II, Hyundai i10, base Toyota Aygo.
- 14 inches — Ford Fiesta V, Vauxhall/Opel Corsa C and D, VW Golf IV, Toyota Aygo, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i20.
- 15 inches — the most common size: Ford Fiesta and base Focus, VW Golf VI and VII, base Vauxhall/Opel Astra, base Toyota Corolla.
- 16 inches — family hatchbacks on bigger tyres: Ford Focus, base VW Golf VII, Hyundai i30, Kia Ceed, Toyota Auris, Dacia Duster I.
- 17 inches — rarer: larger saloons and MPVs on steel wheels.

Will hubcaps fit my car?
Not every car — and we'd rather say so before you buy. Two cases rule hubcaps out:
- Alloy wheels. Hubcaps are made for steel wheels. On an alloy wheel there is nothing for them to grip.
- Flexwheel rims, the steel wheels styled to look like alloys, as on the Dacia Sandero Stepway: their shape leaves no room for a cover.
Vans are a separate case: it depends on the version — the steel wheel just needs to be flat. The Renault Trafic II, Opel Vivaro I and Nissan Primastar are confirmed compatible by a real fitting (16 inch).
On top of that, the groove the clips sit in isn't standardised, so an honest "fits 100% of cars" doesn't exist. Instead, we've checked 449 models from 41 brands, and the list is free to use.
Fitting: five minutes, no tools
- Clean the wheel, especially the rim edge.
- Line the hubcap's valve notch up exactly with the tyre valve.
- Offer the hubcap up and press with both palms, in a cross pattern, until it clips in all the way round.
- Go round it once: it mustn't stand proud anywhere.
There's no need to take the wheel off. To remove it, pull firmly on one edge. Two cable ties per wheel are a recommended safety measure, not a remedy: a hubcap of the right size, lined up correctly, should hold by its clips first. If one still comes off, the cause is almost always the size, the valve notch or tired clips.
Winter, road salt and cleaning
Plastic doesn't rust. In winter a hubcap shields the steel wheel and nuts from road salt, which is why plenty of drivers run winter tyres on steel wheels with hubcaps and keep their alloys for summer.
To clean them, water, a mild car shampoo and a soft sponge are enough. Keep a pressure washer at a distance and never aim it at the edge of the hubcap. On printed hubcaps, use no polish and nothing abrasive: both attack the print.
